Microsoft HoloLens – A View to the Future

The Microsoft HoloLens is a is a pair of mixed reality head-mounted smart glasses. This holographic computer visioning system enables users to interact with high‑definition holograms.

The first pre--production version shipped in March 2016 and sells for a list price of $3,000 in the United States and Canada.

This enhanced reality technology has the potential to dramatically change the way we design and manufacture products.

Manufacturing Engineers from around the world can work together in real time. ITAMCO has created a 'proof of concept' demonstration robot arm so users can see how why can interact with a universal robot and the Microsoft HoloLens.

The user can teach the robot to move to different positions. ITAMCO envisions this tool not only for use by engineers but it will be capable of going onto the shop floor. Microsoft HoloLens technology will bring engineers closer together with technicians on the shop floor, improving product quality and increase the speed to market for new products.

The HoloLens features an inertial measurement unit (IMU) (which includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, and a magnetometer) four "environment understanding" sensors (two on each side), an energy-efficient depth camera with a 120°×120° angle of view, a 2.4-megapixel photographic video camera, a four-microphone array, and an ambient light sensor. The HoloLens is a mixed realty device, a step up from augmented realty. The HoloLens mixes augmented realty with actual reality to create an interactive, visual experience.

Virtual Realty, Augmented Reality, Mixed Realty – How do you keep it all straight?

As new technology develops there is usually some confusion over what is what. Here is brief guide to help keep it all straight.

Virtual Realty (VR) – uses software technology to generate and replicate a real environment using computer generated realistic sounds, images, and tactile sensations.

Augmented Realty (AR) –is a view of a physical, real-world environment with elements  augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. The visible world is overlaid with digital content.

Mixed Realty (MR) – virtual objects are integrated and respond to the visible world. In other words, the virtual world and the real world are merged to create a new environment.
